Plastic bottles are arguably one of the most waste causing materials from our households. While we should obviously learn to reduce our plastic consumption, it is also important to recycle and reuse the plastic we already own. And since houseplants are always great to have, here is how to create a self-watering planter from an empty plastic bottle.
What you will need:
- Empty plastic bottle
- Plant seeds
- Potting soil
Wash the bottle and dry it clean.
Make a mark around the middle of the bottle and using the scissors cut the bottle in half. Try to make the cut as clean and straight as possible.
Turn the top part upside down and place on top of the other part with the “spout” of the top half being inside the bottom half. If one part seems to be too tall or short, adjust by cutting accordingly
Take the bottle cap out and make a hole around the centre. Thread pieces of twine through the hole and screw the cap back on
Put the potting soil in top part and plant the seeds. Set it aside.
Step 6: (optional)
At this point you could decorate the bottom part however way you like. One way to decorate is to wrap it with yarn or rope. Another could be to paint it the color you want.
Fill the bottom part 3/4th of the way with water. Place the top half on top and you’re done!
Since this is a planter is self-watering, you won’t have to water it regularly, but it is important to remember to fill the bottom part with water when it does run out.
Now you can go ahead and turn your plastic waste into houses for plants!
